At Wetherspoon, we take very seriously our commitment to the environment.
We recognise the need to protect our planet and strive continually, through various environmentally focused initiatives, to make a positive impact.
The company has an energy and environment group, chaired by finance director Ben Whitley. Each pub has an energy, environment and recycling champion, responsible for reducing its consumption and communicating top tips and initiatives to staff.
Among other things, we have implemented energy-saving measures across our pubs, including energy-efficient lighting, optimised heating and cooling systems and the use, wherever possible, of renewable energy sources. We work actively to minimise single-use plastics in our pubs, kitchens and hotels and encourage recycling. Wetherspoon has a national distribution centre for food, some bottled drinks and non-consumable products. It also includes a recycling centre. When making deliveries to pubs, lorries collect mixed recycling, used cooking oil, textiles and aluminium for return to the recycling centre – so reducing the company’s carbon footprint via reduced road miles. Last year, pubs sent over 10,000 tonnes of waste to the recycling centre.
